Anna Mia Ekström has been a professor in global infectious disease epidemiology since 2013 combined with clinical practice as senior clinical consultant in infectious diseases with a focus on HIV. She has a Master of Public Health (MPH) in quantitative methods from Harvard School of Public Health (1995) and a Medical Doctor (MD, 1997, Karolinska Institutet (KI) and PhD in medical epidemiology (KI, 2000).
Anna has 20 years of leadership, networking and international project management with a research focus on HIV prevention, treatment, HIV stigma, health systems aspects, risk behaviours among vulnerable key populations in Europe but primarily in low and middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.
She is actively engaged in fighting the COVID19 pandemic both through her research on public health aspects of the pandemic including indirect impacts, and through her participation in several expert groups. These include being an expert member in WHO-COVAX Independent Allocation of Vaccines Group (IAVG) for global COVID-19 vaccine allocation, being part of Sweden’s scientific reference group for access to COVID-19 vaccines (Swedish Foreign department). Anna has also lead KI’s taskforce on COVID-19 and public health, lead KI’s resource group on COVID-19 and global health and been part of KIs taskforce to create a new health emergency and pandemic preparedness centre.
